Ingredients:
For the Meat Sauce:
- 1 pound ground beef (or a combination of beef and pork)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (14 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
- 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Cheese Filling:
- 2 cups ricotta cheese
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- Salt and pepper to taste
Other Ingredients:
- Lasagna noodles (oven-ready or cooked according to package instructions)
- Additional shredded mozzarella cheese for topping
Instructions:
- Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet or saucepan, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and continue cooking until the onion is soft and translucent.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, beef or vegetable broth, dried basil, dried oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce over low heat for about 30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together. Adjust the seasoning if necessary.
- Prepare the Cheese Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, shredded mozzarella cheese, chopped parsley, beaten egg, salt, and pepper. Stir until well combined and set aside.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Assemble the Lasagna: Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of a greased baking dish. Place a layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce, slightly overlapping them. Spread a generous amount of the cheese filling evenly over the noodles. Repeat the layers, alternating between meat sauce, noodles, and cheese filling until you reach the top of the dish. Finish with a layer of meat sauce.
- Sprinkle additional shredded mozzarella cheese on top for a cheesy, golden crust.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Remove the lasagna from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. This will allow the layers to set and make it easier to serve.
- Serve the homemade lasagna with a side salad and garlic bread for a complete and satisfying meal.
Tips:
- Experiment with the meat sauce by adding vegetables like diced carrots, bell peppers, or mushrooms for extra flavor and texture.
- If using oven-ready lasagna noodles, ensure that there is enough sauce to keep the noodles moist during baking.
- Allow the lasagna to rest for at least 10-15 minutes after baking before cutting into it. This will help the layers set and make it easier to serve.
